About the Exhibition

Featuring artwork from two ‘birds’ with a shared passion for telling the stories of birds (the feathered kind) through their art. More than just capturing a visual likeness, Toni and Kristy endeavour to capture the different personalities of the birds, telling fascinating stories about their lives, and portraying the beautiful environments in which they live. Toni works in clay and Kristy in acrylic paint on canvas, but both produce expressive works that are joyful, bold and complement each other to tell the stories of birds. In coming together for this exhibition, Toni and Kristy hope to uplift and inspire people, and nurture a love of, and respect for our birds, wildlife and natural environments.

About the Artists

Toni Bielby

Toni Bielby is a ceramic sculptor who uses clay as her medium of choice to encapsulate the special character of the birds, animals and plants she encounters around the Sunshine Coast.  Based in Yandina, her studio is located in a lush rainforest which is flush with natural inspiration and many feathered, furry and scaly visitors who are often the subject of Toni’s sculptures.  Some of these include a bold Yellow Eastern Robin who flies inside to inspect the rafters for spider snacks.  And a cheeky golden Whistler who loves chattering and knocking on the windows.

Through quiet observation and patient sculpting Toni channels her skills to create lifelike tributes that reflect the individual personalities or stories of each of her subjects.  Often her sculptures consist of textured pressing of bark, flowers, fruits or leaves from the habitat or food sources preferred by a particular species.  Through her work she hopes to highlight how precarious and precious the relationship between birds and their chosen habitat or food source is, inspiring her audience to do their best to preserve and protect our natural environment.

Kristy-Ann Duffy

Kristy-Ann is an Australian artist with a passion for birds - her art is about storytelling. It is her way of sharing special moments she has spent watching birds. Such as a young cockatoo learning to harvest a banksia, a robin stealing bugs from a spider’s web, or the beautiful serenade of butcherbirds at sunrise and in the rain.

She uses a variety of techniques depending on the character of the bird and story she is telling. Often her work is abstracted or expressive in the background with increasing detail to draw you in to the bird and in particular the face and eye. Kristy-Ann also sometimes uses stylized techniques with limited pallet and patterns, cubism, or quality of line and overlapping transparent forms. One thing that remains constant throughout her work is the bright bold colours and joyful expression of her love for birds.
