Kristy-Ann Duffy Australian Artist

I am an Australian artist with a passion for birds. More than just capturing a likeness of birds, I want to share some of those special moments I have spent watching birds through my art. I aim to portray their unusual and fascinating behaviours, the beautiful places they live, and the funny things they do. Like black swans ripping green weed from the bottom of a river, pelicans preening and leaving a trail of soft feathers in the water, or grey fantails fan dancing amongst the trees. I enjoy developing art that is both true to the subject and my own interpretation of the mood to produce unique and vibrant works.

I have gathered inspiration from home, but also from travel to wild and remote places. Kakadu was my home for almost two years, and I have also lived in Tropical North Queensland, along the bank of the Swan River in Perth, and currently I live in bountiful Brisbane. All of these places provided a diversity of interesting birds to get to know and paint. I have also been very fortunate to travel to some very interesting places such as the Okavango delta in Botswana, Patagonia, France, Brazil, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands where the engaging characters of the birds have inspired me and many of my paintings.

I work from my own photos as my ideas and inspiration come from watching the birds, not just the still photo. I believe a painting should tell you something more than a photo; something about the character or behaviour of the bird, or the mood or feeling of the place or moment. I use many different styles and techniques in my art depending on the story I am telling in each particular painting, but there are a few characteristics of my work that are quite distinctive. I like to use line to add emphasis, impact and sometimes to suggest movement. I generally use very bright and pure colours to create bold paintings; I find this adds life and brings joy to my paintings.

Over the years I have attended several workshops and art classes to keep experimenting, learn new techniques, and give me fresh ideas. I attended a Cubism workshop in 2014 and a watery painting techniques workshop in 2015, both run by Svetlana Trefilova at the Brisbane Institute of Art. These workshops provided inspiration for some of my more recent works. I also attended several abstraction art classes and a photography course at the Fremantle Arts Centre while living in Perth in 2008.
